Town Hall Place, the Elizabeth Bradford Centre and Castle Gateway

The Tamworth Series of Projects was completed in 2025.

Town Hall Place, the Elizabeth Bradford Centre and Castle Gateway projects are all part of the Tamworth Future High Street improvements scheme, comprising large scale public realm works and renovation of significant public buildings through the historic town centre.

The initiative set out to reshape the high street experience — transforming the town centre from somewhere people simply had to visit into somewhere they actively want to spend time. By addressing challenges such as declining footfall and an outdated urban environment, the project reimagines the heart of the town as a more vibrant, welcoming civic destination.

The Boardwalk...

Jess Biddle Recognised for Academic Excellence at TU Delft.

During her time as a Part I Architectural Assistant at Glazzard Architects (2024–2025), Jess Biddle made a valuable contribution to the practice, refining her design and model-making skills across a range of projects.

Now continuing her studies at TU Delft Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, we are delighted to share her most recent academic work. The Boardwalk is a proposed civic framework for Scheveningen Harbour in the Netherlands, exploring the relationship between public space, infrastructure and coastal identity.

The project was awarded a distinction, reflecting the strength of Jess’s design approach and her ongoing development as a designer. We congratulate her on this achievement and wish her every success in her future career.

At Glazzard Architects, we value the contribution of Part I and Part II students within the studio. Their enthusiasm, creativity and fresh perspective play an important role in the practice, contributing as much to the studio environment as the experience we are able to offer in return.

"You don't need planning permission to build castles in the sky"

July 2025. A glorious day was spent in Bristol for our annual architectural field trip.

After coffee and pastries at the Architects Cafe Bar, Design West (naturally), we visited College Green, Bristol Beacon, and enjoyed a brilliant and informative personal tour of St George’s.

After lunch we walked along Clifton Bridge (and back again) and spent some time reflecting in the stunning Clifton Cathedral.

Banksy’s murals spotted along the way included Planning Permission and Well Hung Lover.

There was just enough time to pop across the harbour to check out the M Shed, where we had some drinks in the sun before making the last train home.

AJ small projects 2026

Tamworth Castle Gateway is entered for the AJ Small Projects Awards 2026. 

Tamworth Castle Gateway is part of the Tamworth Future High Street Improvements which included large scale public realm works and renovation of significant public buildings through the historic town centre.

Arguably the most significant historic building in the town, Tamworth Castle is now protected as an ancient monument. Sitting above its motte and bailey, it should be a celebrated structure, however, during the 1970s redevelopment the town turned its back on the castle. The Nationwide building was constructed in a position which obscured views of it from the High Street. The historic keep was demolished and access to the castle grounds were created via a narrow, unwelcoming bridge.

The Castle Gateway project has reconnected the historic town centre and the castle, both physically and visually. The demolition of an incongruous 1970s building adjacent to the footbridge has allowed the creation of a widened and improved pedestrian footbridge scheme connecting the castle grounds to the town centre and has reconnected views from the historic Market Street up to the castle.

The scheme introduces a new widened paved area along with carefully designed and situated seating and lighting, as well as the widened bridge constructed with powder coated ‘fin’ balusters that sit comfortably over the top of the historic stone walls of the castle keep. Views into the gardens of the historic burgage plots along Market Street are revealed, along with the outer side of the historic castle curtain wall.

AJ Small Projects champions the very best architecture delivered on a modest budget – recognising completed projects with a contract value of £399,000 or under. Results to be announced in April.

Newland Court Masterplan success!

This farmstead on the outskirts of Malvern, comprising a Grade II Listed Georgian Farmhouse and farmyard with complex heritage, was successfully taken to full planning and listed building consent for 11 dwellings, much to the delight of our own team and clients.

We develop designs to the Planning stage (RIBA Stage 3), coordinating with the project team to ensure a functional, striking, and fully integrated building, including landscape, interiors, services, and architecture.

Crumplebury

This beautiful project was voted Winner of the Worcestershire Architecture Award for Built Project 2025.

Our client had been successfully operating Green Cow Kitchen from the site for some years and were eager to expand and utilise dilapidated agricultural buildings around the site.

The function buildings take their inspiration from traditional agricultural forms while using contemporary materials and construction forms. The event space comprises a duo-pitched, open-span structure with glazed gables and clad in estate-sourced timber. This design blends traditional forms with modern detailing to maintain a connection with the site while distinguishing new from old.

The accommodation building is deliberately ‘dug into’ the ground to reduce visual impact. The East-West orientation of the original dining room  follows natural site typography. The design ensures only the first floor is visible at the western end, with the land sloping to reveal a two-storey façade opening onto a landscaped courtyard.

This courtyard provides a distinct yet sympathetic space while preserving the original farmstead yard and offering a gathering space for guests. A wildflower meadow further blends the accommodation into the landscape.

The Studley Co-Op supermarket project was a regional RIBA Award winner that also featured on the front cover of the Architects Journal in 1985.

The Leo Supermarket was both a bold architectural statement and a quiet rebellion—praised by critics for its clarity of form and historic resonance, yet met with ambivalence, even resistance, by the public.

careers exhibition at RGS Worcester

Helen and Simon recently attended the careers exhibitions at RGS Worcester to meet students with an interest in architecture.

At Glazzards we enjoy hosting school and university students in various work placements throughout the year.

Our 3 and 5 day placements for school years 10-12 offers invaluable insight into the day-to-day life of architectural practice.

Our 2 week placement for undergraduates allows students to develop technical skills in model making, CAD software and illustrator, as well as visit project sites and be client facing with the lead architect.

We can help you curate an interior style for your project to take it to a complete finish.

This can include design solutions for lighting, storage, window dressings and soft furnishings. We can make recommendations as well as source items, by working directly with product manufacturers and retailers.

We can also manage the installation of all fittings and dressings, with our on-site contractors, to save you time and allow you to come into a completed, dressed space.

A grand entrance...

Perrins Hall Loggia 

Completed in 2026, the scheme for Perrins Hall improves accessibility and thermal performance of the existing building by introducing glazed doors to the existing 3 arched loggia space and replacing the concrete entrance steps with a generous, ramped walkway, curved steps and feature lighting.

Working in close collaboration with Allard’s of Worcester, the selection of stone and method of construction was crucial in order to get the correct colour and longevity to the material, which in this case was from Stanton Moor quarry in the Peak District. Through this design phase the stonemason was able to suggest and then deliver textured transition elements, recessed lighting and signage features as well as detailed setting out information for the curved slabs.

The project included installation of black metal framed doors which were in-keeping with the original building’s crittal windows. The doors are deeply set within the 3 arched, brick and stone loggia in order that the new element is sympathetic to the original design of the covered area.

The new intervention provides a subtle but high quality addition to the RGS campus.
