KINLOCHARD

Kinlochard was originally constructed in the 1950s and occupies a site at the lower end of an historic agricultural route known as The Purlieu, on the western slopes of the Malvern Hills. The house sits within a landscape of mature trees and gently undulating ground, with expansive views toward the Black Mountains and the Welsh borders. However, the existing building neither addressed the landscape effectively nor met the spatial requirements of its new owners.

The proposal reimagines the relationship between house and landscape through the addition of a lightweight pavilion. Conceived as a discrete architectural element, the pavilion extends the domestic programme while reorienting key living spaces toward the surrounding landscape and distant views.

Responding to the site’s changing topography, the structure is elevated on slender steel columns, allowing it to lightly touch the ground and heightening the sense of inhabiting the landscape. A generous covered deck extends the interior space outward, while a bridge connection links the pavilion back to the existing house and provides access to a new garden studio.

Construction was informed by both economy and the practical constraints of the site’s restricted access. The building employs a lightweight structural frame infilled with insulated timber panels, paired with full-height sliding glazing that maximises daylight, frames views, and reinforces the pavilion’s visual connection to the landscape.
