MALVERN EVANGELICAL CHURCH

Located along a busy suburban street in Malvern, the new church building establishes a distinct civic presence, providing a clear architectural marker and focal point within an otherwise unremarkable urban context.

The design strategy positions the principal church hall prominently at the front of the site. Conceived as the spatial and symbolic heart of the development, the hall forms the primary gathering space for the church community. The hall itself is expressed as a circular form, clad in timber shingles, creating a simple and unified architectural volume with a warm and tactile material character.

The brief required a flexible assembly space capable of accommodating more than 200 people, supported by a range of ancillary facilities including meeting rooms, a crèche, kitchen and function areas. The architectural response is deliberately restrained yet expressive, allowing the clarity of form and material to give the building a strong and legible identity.

High-level glazing wraps around the upper perimeter of the circular hall, drawing natural light deep into the space while framing elevated views towards the Malvern Hills. This continuous band of glazing gives the interior a calm, daylit quality and strengthens the visual connection between the church and its surrounding landscape.

To the rear of the site, the original building has been reconstructed to provide additional accommodation, including a secondary hall and a series of meeting rooms. These spaces are organised around a central foyer and kitchen, which act as the social nucleus of the building and a natural point of congregation and interaction.

Environmental performance and acoustic comfort were key drivers in the design of the main hall. A displacement ventilation strategy introduces tempered air at low level through a floor plenum, allowing air to rise naturally through the space. This approach minimises mechanical noise and air turbulence, ensuring appropriate environmental conditions within an acoustically sensitive assembly space.
