MOATHOUSE LANE

This project involved the refurbishment and extension of a group of 19th-century farm buildings that had been converted to residential use during the 1980s.

The existing conversion suffered from a poor internal arrangement, construction defects and generally low environmental performance.

The design introduces a new extension to the front garden, providing additional living accommodation including a living room, bedroom, bathroom and wine cellar. Site boundaries and planning constraints informed the form of the addition, resulting in an extruded mono-pitch volume extending eastward.

This arrangement maintains privacy to the new bedroom while allowing generous south light to enter the principal living space. The simple form and orientation maximise daylight while establishing a clear relationship with the surrounding landscape.

Internally, the house was comprehensively remodelled and re-insulated to improve both spatial quality and energy performance. The kitchen was repositioned at the centre of the plan, creating a new social heart to the house and strengthening connections between the interior and
