GREAT BARR SCHOOL
SUNFIELD
Sunfield is a long-established residential and educational centre providing specialist care and teaching for children with complex learning needs.
The project involved the extension and refurbishment of existing teaching and therapy facilities together with the construction of a new classroom wing. The design aimed to create inspiring and supportive learning environments capable of accommodating a wide range of individual needs while remaining robust enough to withstand demanding daily use.
The new spaces were designed to provide flexibility for different teaching approaches and therapeutic activities, while maintaining clear supervision and calm, well-lit environments for students and staff.
The architectural language combines natural and durable materials including cedar cladding, oak joinery, plywood panelling and coloured renders, alongside exposed timber structural elements. A new biomass heating system was installed to serve both the new accommodation and existing buildings, improving the overall environmental performance of the campus.
