TOWN HALL PLACE

Town Hall Place forms a central part of Tamworth’s town centre regeneration, delivered through the Future High Street Fund programme launched in 2020.

The initiative set out to reshape the high street experience — transforming the town centre from somewhere people simply had to visit into somewhere they actively want to spend time. By addressing challenges such as declining footfall and an outdated urban environment, the project reimagines the heart of the town as a more vibrant, welcoming civic destination.

Positioned directly opposite Tamworth’s historic Town Hall, the development introduces seven independent retail units within a striking new building designed specifically to nurture small and local businesses. Flexible and affordable spaces provide opportunities for independent retailers and start-ups, helping to reinvigorate the local economy while restoring activity and character to this prominent part of the town centre.

The project replaces an underperforming 1960s development, fundamentally rethinking how the site engages with its surroundings. By inverting the building’s geometry, the design opens up the site to create a new public square — a space that reconnects the architecture with the civic setting and invites people to pause, gather and interact within the town centre.

From Stage 4 onwards, Glazzard Architects worked closely with the main contractor to refine the design and develop the detailed construction approach. Through careful material selection and considered detailing, the building balances contemporary expression with sensitivity to its historic context. The result is a confident yet respectful addition to Tamworth’s urban fabric — one that supports independent enterprise, creates a new civic space, and plays a key role in the town centre’s ongoing renewal.
