MALVERN THEATRES
WHITE HOUSE
The White House is a locally listed building located within Great Witley, close to Witley Court.
The Victorian house was originally built as a school and later converted to residential use in the early 20th century. The building has been subject to various extensions to the rear elevation notably a westerly wing with projecting stone bay window over 2 storeys, set within a brick facade.
Other more modern, single storey extensions, provided gloomy and uninspiring internal spaces, not fitting of the rest of the house.
The proposal for removal of these extensions and replacing with a more contemporary space that connected to the garden and its long distance views formed the principal part of the brief.
The scheme creates an open plan kitchen and living space, held under a large, cantilevered roof, that allows corner glazing to open the internal space up to the gardens. The sale of the roof fascia is aligned with the stone spandrel of the existing bay window and creates a more visual connection to the existing proportions and material.
The room can be enjoyed internally with shaded views out, or opened up in order to provide outside dining under a generous covered area.
