WINTON HOUSE

Winton House is a substantial family residence that had previously been extended to the rear with a glazed, flat-roofed structure supported by a glulam timber frame.

Glazzard Architects were commissioned to design a complementary front extension that continues the architectural language of the earlier addition. The new intervention provides two ensuite guest rooms, a study and a car port.

The extension is set half a storey below the elevated ground floor of the existing house, allowing the new accommodation to connect discreetly to the main building while reducing its visual impact.

Two frameless glazed links form the points of connection, maintaining views from the principal living spaces while creating a light and carefully defined transition between old and new.

The guest suites are arranged around a sunken courtyard, which introduces natural light into the lower level while providing a private planted space and a secure outdoor environment.

Internally, the material palette is deliberately restrained. New timber joinery is finished in dark walnut, while a polished concrete floor runs continuously throughout the extension. The combination of these elements creates a calm, cohesive interior with a strong and atmospheric character.
