This project involved the sensitive alteration of a prominent listed building overlooking Worcester Cathedral, together with the construction of a contemporary glazed extension to the rear to provide the shell and infrastructure for a new restaurant.

The site’s historic significance required careful and sustained collaboration with the local planning authority, conservation officers and archaeologists. Archaeological remains across the site were closely monitored throughout construction, with the structural frame and floor systems designed to minimise ground disturbance.

The design approach sought to balance the operational requirements of the restaurant with the preservation of the building’s historic character and its wider setting. Achieving this required close cooperation between the project team, city officers and interior fit-out designers.

The new extension adopts a restrained architectural language, using frameless glazing and finely detailed junctions to create a light and contemporary addition. This approach allows the extension to sit quietly alongside the historic structure, complementing the form and materials of the original building while maintaining clear visual connections to the cathedral and surrounding cityscape.
